I believe that Dr. Tomato’s treatment is the first turning point of Victoria’s life
저는 닥터토마토의 치료는 빅토리아 삶의 첫 번째 전환점이고
and the S2C (spell to communicate) is the second turning point of her life.
S2C(철자를 통한 의사소통 방법)는 빅토리아 삶의 두 번째 전환점이라고 믿습니다.
Since she used spelling,
철자법을 사용한 이후로
she has been able to communicate better
and her expressive language was improved a lot.
의사소통을 더 잘 할 수 있었고 표현력이 많이 향상되었습니다.
Also, since she used the number board when she worked on math,
또한, 빅토리아가 수학을 공부할 때도 숫자판을 사용했기 때문에
we learned Victoria was able to do mental math
우리는 빅토리아가 암산을 할 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었고
and this past February (a few months ago)
그리고 지난 2월 (몇 달 전)
I found out my daughter was a math genius.
저는 제 딸이 수학 천재라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.
Before I found out the fact she barely could do one-digit addition
빅토리아가 겨우 한 자리수 덧셈을 할 수 있다는 사실을 알고 있었고,
and I was struggling with how to teach her carry over addition.
저는 빅토리아에게 받아올림 덧셈을 어떻게 가르쳐야 할지 고민하고 있었습니다.
Because she was very bad at math at the time,
그 당시에 빅토리아가 수학을 매우 못했기 때문에
I thought she had an intellectual disability
or her brain was damaged due to her autism.
저는 빅토리아가 자폐증 때문에 지적 장애가 있거나 뇌가 손상되었다고 생각했습니다.
Also, her school teacher said that two-digit numbers
또한, 학교 선생님은 두 자리 숫자와
and the idea of regrouping are too hard for Victoria to understand.
받아올림 덧샘에 대한 개념을 빅토리아가 이해하기에는 너무 어렵다고 말했습니다.
However, when I taught her carry over addition,
하지만, 제가 빅토리아에게 받아올림 덧셈을 가르쳤을 때
accidently I found out Victoria was able to do mental math
우연히 빅토리아가 암산을 할 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었고
and she already knew addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, algebra,
geometry, function, equation, fraction, decimals, graphs, everything about math.
빅토리아는 이미 덧셈, 뺄셈, 곱셈, 나눗셈, 대수학, 기하학, 함수, 방정식,
분수, 십진법, 그래프, 수학에 대한 모든 것을 알고 있었습니다.
She already knew all the math formulas.
빅토리아는 이미 모든 수학 공식들을 알고 있었습니다.
She has never and ever learned before.
지금까지 단 한번도 배운 적도 없었습니다.
Nobody taught her.
아무도 빅토리아에게 가르치지 않았어요.
She couldn’t do even two-digit addition a few months ago.
빅토리아는 몇 달 전까지도 두 자리수 덧셈도 하지 못했습니다.
She had to use a number line or math blocks for one-digit addition.
한 자리 덧셈을 위해 숫자 줄이나 수학 블록을 사용해야 했습니다.
But, when I used the number board and let her point to the answer,
하지만, 제가 숫자판을 사용하고 빅토리아가 답을 가리키도록 했을 때
finally she was able to show her math skills and ability.
마침내 빅토리아의 수학 능력을 보여줄 수 있었습니다.
So, I bought a SAT math book right away
그래서 저는 바로 SAT 수학 책을 샀고
and she answered all the questions only with her mental math.
빅토리아는 모든 질문에 오직 암산으로 대답했습니다.
Because she was very good at math,
빅토리아가 수학을 매우 잘했기 때문에
I asked her high school calculation questions on physics.
저는 빅토리아에게 고등학교 물리학 문제를 질문했습니다.
She has never learned about physics before.
빅토리아는 이전에 물리학에 대해 배운 적이 없습니다.
She has never learned about science before.
이전에 과학에 대해 배운 적도 없습니다.
However, she answered all the questions correctly.
하지만, 빅토리아는 모든 질문에 정확하게 대답했습니다.
It was unbelievable and very mysterious to me.
그것은 저에게 믿을 수 없는 일이었고, 매우 신비로웠습니다.
It was hard to believe it but it was true, that was my daughter.
믿기 힘들었지만 그건 사실이었어요, 그리고, 그게 저의 딸이었어요.
I think Victoria was born with a genius brain,
저는 빅토리아가 천재적인 두뇌를 가지고 태어났다고 생각하지만
but her genius brain was covered with her autism
characteristics such as language impairment
빅토리아의 천재적인 뇌는 언어 장애와 같은 자폐증 특성들로 가려져 있었습니다.
and sensory processing disorder
and limited social interaction, so nobody knew the fact.
감각 처리 장애와 제한적인 사회적 상호 작용으로 인해 아무도 그 사실을 알지 못했습니다.
After Dr. Tomato’s treatment,
닥터토마토 치료 이후에
those autism symptoms faded away and her genius brain came to light.
자폐증 증상은 사라지고 빅토리아의 천재적인 뇌가 드러났습니다.
In regards to her literacy,
읽고 쓰는 능력에 관해서는
now she is good at reading comprehension
지금은 독해력이 뛰어나지만
but, she is still struggling with reading aloud and hand writing
because of her apraxia and poor fine motor skills but they are getting better.
여전히 빅토리아의 아프락시아 (apraxia) 와 소근육 문제 때문에 큰 소리로 읽는 것과
손으로 쓰는 것에 어려움을 겪고 있지만, 점점 나아지고 있습니다.
After she started the treatment,
치료를 시작한 후
she was getting smarter and I thought she could learn musical instruments.
빅토리아는 점점 더 똑똑해지고 있었고 저는 빅토리아가 악기를 배울 수 있다고 생각했습니다.
So, she started Violin lesson and she is very good at violin.
그래서 바이올린 레슨을 시작했고 바이올린을 매우 잘합니다.
Playing the violin is good for her coordination between her brain and body
바이올린을 연주하는 것은 두뇌와 신체의 조화에 좋습니다.
