Hello, this is the 19th lecture of Dr.Tomato Protocol.
Today’s lecture topic is ‘Understanding the Improvement Trajectory of Autism Spectrum Disorder’.
(The purpose of this lecture is?) When parents receive treatment from me
It is a lecture designed to help children understand in advance what progress they have taken to recover
as children in the normal category and the passage and changes of that long time.
You must watch this lecture to accurately assess whether your child is improving or worsening.
One of the most important issues in treating autism spectrum disorder is…
It is that there are widespread misjudgments about the changes that occur when autism spectrum disorder improves.
What is the most important problem?
When assessing the improvement and deterioration of autism spectrum disorder
As ‘increase and decrease of stereotyped behavior’ or ‘increase and decrease of sensory pursuit’,
There are many attempts to assess improvement through a reduction in abnormal behaviors.
This is a very incorrect approach.
What are stereotyped behavior and sensory-seeking behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder?
It has quite a variety of meanings.
Sometimes it expresses an abnormal emotional state,
and in some cases, it is used as a means of communication.
Therefore, it is not possible to assess the improvement or deterioration of autism spectrum disorder based solely on the increase or decrease of sensory-seeking behaviors and repetitive behaviors.
To give an extreme example?
Despite improving greatly
There are children in whom sensory seeking behaviors or stereotyped behaviors increase rapidly.
At this time, if parents don’t understand it properly,
Despite the child showing significant improvement
Due to the increase in abnormal behavior, I have also seen many unfortunate cases of stopping treatment while evaluating that autism has worsened.
What I want to say clearly is
There is only one criterion for evaluating the improvement and deterioration of autism.
It is the child’s ‘social development’.
In other words, sociality.
Is there an increase in the child’s interest in people and their ability to interact?
Based on this criterion, the improvement or worsening of a child with autism should be evaluated.
In other words, autism is inherently flawed in social interaction
If this deficit is fundamentally being addressed, then it is being treated.
And when interaction at the level of a typical child or an average person is possible
Autism treatment can be said to be complete.
When treating autism spectrum disorder based solely on ‘social development’ and moving towards the normal range
I’ll explain how it goes.
If you look at the graph on the left,
This is a graph that typically shows the progression towards the normal range.
The horizontal axis at the bottom represents the number of months of treatment.
The vertical axis is sociality,
When the standard of the normal category is 100,
This is a graph that shows at what level the improvement is occurring.
The months and the graph changes that we see here are mostly for the most typical autistic children.
It can be said that children in the autism spectrum disorder category between 36 and 60 months generally have these treatment progresses.
This graph consists of stage 1, stage 2, and stage 3
We will enter the normal category through the 1st to 3rd phases on a large axis.
If you divide it more broadly, 2nd and 3rd units can be tied into one axis,
To put this succinctly?
